Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is 36 years old this month.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is a vital civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities across employment, public services, and public spaces. It is divided into five core sections known as titles.

Key Titles of the ADA

  • Title I - Employment: Requires employers with 15 or more workers to provide reasonable changes or adjustments (accommodations) for qualified workers with disabilities.

  • Title II - Public Services: Stops state and local government agencies from discriminating and requires equal access to public programs and public transit.

  • Title III - Public Accommodations: Requires privately run businesses open to the public—like hotels, restaurants, and stores—to remove physical barriers and ensure equal service.

  • Title IV - Telecommunications: Mandates relay services and closed captioning options for individuals with speech or hearing impairments.

  • Title V - Miscellaneous: Covers legal rules on insurance, state immunity, and a ban on retaliation against those asserting their rights.
