Extremely Low Basic Education in nearly One-Third of Indiana's Adult Workforce Remains Enormous Issue

mid a pool of nearly 1 million adult Hoosiers who lack basic reading and math skills needed for jobs in a rapidly changing economy, Indiana lawmakers, eduators and residents should act aggressively to close Indiana's basic-education gap with other states, leaders said Oct. 6, 2009, in South Bend.

"Almost one million adults in Indiana don't read or do math at a level that allows them to parti- cipate in that economy," said Carol D'Amico, a consultant to the Indiana Department of Educa- tion and senior adviser to Conexus Indiana, as reported by the South Bend Tribune.

"I don't get," she added, "why we're not kicking tail to do what we need around the state. You've got all the ingredients to be successful. What is missing?"
