Post Date:09/29/2017 10:12 AM

SOUTH BEND, IN – On September 27, 2017, as part of National Employ Older Workers Week, The Northern Indiana Workforce Board’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) recognized the Christian Life Center and two older workers, Darcel Thayer and Anita Jones, for their positive impact in the community. A ceremony was held to honor Darcel and Anita for their successful participation and to recognize the Christian Life Center for being a Host Agency that excels in helping older workers meet their employment goals.

“We were in need of help, and found out about the opportunities SCSEP has to offer,” said Shanna Neal, Pastor at the Christian Life Center, during the ceremony. “It seemed too good to be true! SCSEP paid for Anita and Darcel to be trained by us, and it’s been a blessing all the way around. It has benefitted us very greatly. SCSEP has enabled us to not only be able to get more services done… but also save us a lot of funds while doing so. It was a great pleasure to just be a part of this and also hire and have success for our two participants.”

Darcel Thayer, 64, and Anita Jones, 67, expressed their gratitude upon receiving their certificates at the ceremony. They found permanent, unsubsidized employment that helped them maintain their independence and improve their quality of life through the assistance of SCSEP.

Darcel and Anita had been out of the workforce for several years and found they needed more income. They came to SCSEP, and their wants, needs, and abilities were assessed. For their worksite training, Darcel and Anita were placed at the Christian Life Center. Through training and guidance from SCSEP, WorkOne Northern Indiana, and the Christian Life Center, Darcel and Anita were able to secure employment at The Christian Life Center. Darcel Thayer, 64, who had not worked in 11 years, was able to secure employment as an Accounting Assistant. Anita Jones, 67 who had not worked in over 3 years, was able to secure employment as a Receptionist.

“I focus on meeting the training and employment needs of older workers,” said Peggy Miller, SCSEP Director. “SCSEP works with the most in need.  These are the people 55 and older, limited to no income, and unemployed. Most are on disability, have low literacy, and quite often are homeless; or at least at risk of homelessness. The purpose of our program is to give participants, like Anita and Darcel, the tools to replenish and repurpose so they can gain unsubsidized employment, and improve the quality of their life.”

Although in their 60’s, Darcel and Anita found help, hope, and permanent employment thanks to SCSEP, WorkOne Northern Indiana, and the Christian Life Center. Older workers, are entering the workforce at a fast pace and are helping stimulate the local economy, which strongly benefits the entire community. SCSEP continues to successfully connect unemployed, low-income seniors with agencies that provide part-time subsidized employment and training opportunities that help return older workers to the workforce.
